When I left my little town in the North, I wasn’t sure of what to expect from this staggering experience.
Definitely, I planned to leave for fun and not only to learn italian.
Why did I pick Italy?
Do I really have to explain to you why I opted for the most beautiful country in the world which has the tastiest food I’ve ever savored in my entire life?
Well, here we are, let’s detail the most striking journey of a foreign lonely man in Florence, Italy.
ITALIAN, ALWAYS BEEN MY PASSION
When I was a teenager, I used to watch old movies set in those incredible Italian landscapes: Rome, Naples, Florence and the unique Venice.
My family was lucky enough to travel around the world before I was born and they kept telling me how much they enjoyed Italy in all its shades: people, sightseeing, food, tradition and art.
So I spent my youth with this love for Italian Country and once I graduated I promised myself I’d have had some time in Italy for both learning its challenging but so romantic language and savoring the delicious food.
SIMPLE, RESERVING AND THEN JUST LEAVE!
I made so much researches of which town I should go to and which school could have been the best for my goals. I chose Florence for so many points!
1st, its optimal location in a sort of way very convenient in the centre of the region and I’ll illustrate you later why this was a very crucial factor, and 2nd for the school I chose between so many others. Browsing reviews and opinions online regardingItalian schools for strangers, I practically had no choice but pick up its name!
I attended lessons at David Institute of Florence where I felt immediately welcome and I was able to feel a high level of professionalism and reliability.
Studying a new language is not a joke, moreover if we think to learn a very tricky language as Italian is, but this school understands how to deal with that and I mastered as much as I could in a couple weeks. I probably cannot understand and translate the notorious Manzoni and his Promessi Sposi, but I’m now able to let people understand me and I even can be left all alone in the streets without the problem of communication.
I made everything on line on davidschool.com and all I needed to do was just… LEAVE!
MY FIRST DAY, PRICELESS!
As I arrived in Florence (yes, there is a tiny but functional flight terminal near the historical town) I was bewildered by the loudness and the scents around me. I was in Italy, now!
I picked up my luggage and called a taxi, almost everything was just going on well, until I made an effort to tell my driver the location I had to get to.
He first understood David the renowned statue by Michelangelo and drove me there, exactly in front of the Galleria dell’Accademia. Then, after many of explanations in my very mistaken and poor Italian, added to his quite deceptive English, he finally took me to the door of the David School.
Quite hilarious, isn’it?
AH, THE DISHES: A PIECE OF HEAVEN
I’ve always considered myself as a person who doesn’t like eating that much. I mean, I can appreciate a good dish, but I’m not keen on cooking or eating as a general rule. Well, that was way before I chose to Florence.
I’ll never forget their delicious Fiorentina, a sort of a very popular local t-bone known around Italy.
I treated myself like a king and I even got fat but it’s impossible not to eat while you are here, it is component of the experience in Italy.
Ice-creams, pizza, beef, pasta, salumi (jam, salame and other pieces of real heaven) are nearly everywhere around you and you can’t refuse!
FLORENCE, THE SECRET FOR DAYTIME ADVENTURES
I opted for Florence for its strategical position mainly because I planned to have some trips during my stay. I went to the Fashion Capital, Milan then Venice and Rome and I could move a lot thanks to the trains. From Florence you a have a wide and very well-connected railway system that lets you to get to almost any destination you desire.
Still if you need to be in Florence only, you need to be sure to have at least one week for sightseeing this spectacular city.
Its Uffizi, with masterpieces by Botticelli as his Venus, must be booked on time considering that each and every day there is a fair queue of tourists patiently waiting at the entrance.
And as you wander in Florence streets or along the impressive Ponte Vecchio, you can feel the real history all around you. This city hosted the most incredible creative thinkers of the centuries: Leonardo, Dante, Lorenzo il Magnifico.
This is the birthplace of humanity knowledge, this is where Italian language was born and I was enough fortunate to live here for two entire weeks.
LEARNING AND HAVING A GREAT TIME!
After feeling a sense of independence, I had to remind myself the reason of my travel to Florence: study a new language!
I worked hard to memorize and study the most I could, but there was also sufficient time for us, the students, to have a good time with people!
We used to go out in groups after courses and I quickly discovered that “aperitivo” is a great way to enjoy some time in an Italian club just before dinner time. I won’t tell you more, just find out by yourself and you won’t be upset!
Italian guys are so much fun and laid back, you will find yourself in an extraordinary atmosphere.
You won’t be sorry for this investment, you will eventually feel dissapointed about not having done that sooner!
